Hi, I’m Cathy Leer. I’m a licensed physical therapist AND I’ve suffered from sciatica just like you. Sciatica Solution

Congratulations for taking the first step towards getting your life back and healing your sciatic pain. To get started, it’s as simple as taking the self-tests, then answering a few simple questions.

Watch the videos and perform the self-tests now. Make sure to write down your answers to the tests, as you’ll need to write them down in the questionnaire.

Test #1: Standing Back Extension

If at any point during testing, you notice your LEG PAIN is WORSE, stop this test and score it.

  • Stand in front of a chair with feet shoulder width apart
  • Place your hands on the back or sides of your hips
  • Keeping your knees relatively straight, slowly bend backwards, then return upright
  • Repeat this motion 10 times

Scoring

Did this INCREASE PAIN in your leg? Yes » score as LEG PAIN INCREASED (worse). Otherwise, score the test as either

  • NO CHANGE in LEG PAIN, or
  • LEG PAIN DECREASED (got better)

Test #2: Forward Bending

If at any point during testing, you notice your LEG PAIN is WORSE, stop this test and score it.

  • Stand with your legs fairly close together.
  • Slowly bend forward and reach for your toes
  • Return to upright
  • Repeat test 10 times
  • On the last repetition of bending, add a cough at the end.

Scoring

Did this INCREASE PAIN in your leg? Yes » score as LEG PAIN INCREASED (worse)

Otherwise, score the test as either

  • NO CHANGE in LEG PAIN, or
  • LEG PAIN DECREASED (got better)

Test #3: Prone Back Extension

If at any point during testing, you notice your LEG PAIN is WORSE, stop this test and score it.

  • Lie down on your stomach on a relatively firm surface that you know you will be able to get up from.
  • Place hands on the floor just under your shoulders
  • Keeping your back and legs RELAXED, use your arms to push up onto your hands as high as you can go comfortably while still keeping your hips on the surface.
  • If you are unable to extend your arms fully, do a few repetitions to see if you can increase the extension of your arms with each repetition.
  • Complete 10 repetitions if you can do so without increasing your leg pain and score the test accordingly.

Scoring

Did this INCREASE PAIN in your leg? Yes » score as LEG PAIN INCREASED (worse). Otherwise, score the test as either

  • NO CHANGE in LEG PAIN, or
  • LEG PAIN DECREASED (got better)

Test #4: Slump Test

If at any point during testing, you notice your LEG PAIN is WORSE, stop this test and score it.

  • Sit up straight on a chair that is tall enough to allow you to freely move your leg
  • Tuck your chin to your chest, slump or bend your back until you’ve gone as low as you can go (stop if there’s pain)
  • Starting with your pain-free leg, bend your foot toward you and straighten your knee, return the leg
  • Then repeat with the painful leg.

Scoring

You are likely to feel a significant stretch in the back of the leg regardless of pain. But, did this INCREASE PAIN in your leg? Yes » score as LEG PAIN INCREASED (worse)

Otherwise, score the test as either

  • NO CHANGE in LEG PAIN, or
  • LEG PAIN DECREASED (got better)

Now that you’ve completed the self-tests, it’s time to record your answers and finish the questionnaire. There’s only 10 quick questions and then you’ll find out if you have sciatica and if it’s related to a herniated disc.
