Functional Movement Systems Screen and Specialized 1-on-1 Exercise

By James Goodwin, PTA, CSCS; Cathy J Leer, PT, MBA

Based upon your area of interest or desired athletic endeavor in combination with your specific functional movement and capacity, the staff at FPTS can develop exercise and training programs individualized to your needs. Utilizing the Functional Movement Systems program our FMS and FCS certified practitioners can determine your particular functional movement patterns and fundamental capacity in the areas of power, energy, posture, and balance. Programs can then be developed to play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses to prevent injury by promoting a healthy movement style.

The individual can participate in the screening process alone or opt for a full screen and exercise program development. It’s your choice!

This month we will talk about the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) as part of our Functional Screening Program. This screen is for you if:

  • you are a young athlete who wants to perform better in a sport or at showcases, throw harder or longer, run faster, participate in gym class or make the varsity team.
  • you are a mature adult who can’t walk beyond 1/2 mile without feeling sore all over, are looking to get back to the gym or workout and don’t have a clue as to where or how to start, or haven’t been able to pick up or play with the kids or grandkids.
  • you are a golfer looking to add yards to your drives, compete head-to-head with your colleagues, or play without hurting.

Functional Screening – As with most things in life, the first step in correcting something is understanding it. Would you like to know how your body should move and learn what you can do to correct it? These screens and assessments can help.

Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

Identify weaknesses and faulty patterns in your movement that could affect your making the sports team or impact your quality of life. The FMS assesses your ability to perform key “functional movements” such as squatting and lunging. Is the issue about lack of mobility or lack of stability? These are not only essential to athletes of all ages but each one of us in our daily activities from yard work to playing with the grand-kids. Used by professional athletes and world-renowned sports organizations including the NFL and top European soccer clubs (e.g., Liverpool FC), the FMS helps maximize how you perform – whether in sport or life.
